I became a homeopath when I was four. Not the trained kind - but the broken-hearted kind.
My sister was very sick. Something was wrong, and I just wanted it all to go away. Forever. I was filled with questions too big for a little mind:
What if she dies? Does that mean she lives somewhere else? Will we never play again?
As she was rushed to the hospital, I stood in the seafoam green entryway of our home and quietly decided: I want to be a doctor when I grow up. Then another thought: Actually, I want to be the kind of doctor who helps people stay well so they don’t get sick in the first place. That way, I thought, mommies wouldn’t cry, and daddies wouldn’t pace the floor. The simple, tender logic of a child.
Sadly, 3rd grade math ended my plans for med school - but I never forgot that moment. Years later, homeopathy found me… and wouldn’t let go. Through it, that little girl’s wish came true - more beautifully than she could have imagined. Maybe it’s a good thing I wasn’t great at math after all.
